Frequently asked questions

How does the settlement minimise transfers?

It nets every person down to a single balance, then repeatedly matches the largest creditor with the largest debtor. For a group of n people this settles in at most n-1 transfers instead of the many pairwise payments a naive split would produce.

Can several people pay for the same expense?

Yes. Add the expense once per payer with the amount each of them actually paid, keeping the same participant list. The balances combine correctly.

How should I handle tax and tip?

Enter them as a percentage on the expense. They are distributed in the same proportion as the split, so someone who had a larger share of the bill also carries a larger share of the tax.

What if someone did not share an item?

Untick them in that expense's participant list. They are excluded from that item only and still share everything else.

Is my data saved anywhere?

It is saved in this browser and synced to your account on the CRMTECH server, so it is restored on any device you sign in from, with earlier versions kept. Export the summary as CSV or text to share it with the group.

Is Bill Splitter & Settlement free?

Yes. Bill Splitter & Settlement is free for everyone and needs no sign-up to use. An account is only needed to export, download or print, because every export is recorded.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Bill Splitter & Settlement works inside your web browser, so the files you open are processed on your own device. If you sign in, the work you save (such as drafts and registers) is also kept in your account so it follows you to other devices.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. It works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on phones, tablets and computers, with nothing to install.
